Benefits of Individual Therapy

Benefits of Individual Therapy for Opioid Abuse

Those who are grappling with opioid addictions typically have more affecting them than just their dependency upon their substance or substances of choice. Addiction is not just caused by the actual physical act of ingesting a drug, but instead there are a number of emotional issues that go into an addiction’s development. Therefore, it is critical for individual therapy to be included into an individual’s treatment plan.

Individual therapy is a form of treatment that includes working alongside a counselor in a private setting on a regular basis. This form of therapy holds a number of benefits for those who are striving towards recovering from an addiction to opioids like morphine, prescription painkillers, or heroin. Some of these many benefits can include:

  • Determining the past trauma and turmoil that has added to the substance abuse
  • Developing fresh perspectives pertaining to all of the causes of the substance abuse
  • Creating new skills that allow an individual to healthily cope with negativity and stress
  • Working through challenges and achievements throughout treatment
  • Devising strategies that will help an individual cope with tempting situations where he or she might be vulnerable to using again
  • Establishing current and future goals for oneself

Being capable of understanding one’s own emotions, feelings, behaviors, and reasons for their life choices can dramatically help an individual develop a plan for the future that includes good health and freedom from drug use. Individual therapy is an excellent place to have discussions such as these, as a person can obtain support from his or her counselor at this time.

Additionally, those who obtain individual therapy might also yield the following benefits as well:

  • Increased sense of self-awareness
  • Increased self-confidence
  • Reduced stress
  • Improved self-esteem

Each of these benefits can help an individual lay a solid foundation for developing a strong recovery that no longer includes the dangerous use of deadly substances.
